The PMO manages the Joint Sickness Insurance Scheme (JSIS), providing health cover for EU staff and pensioners. The scheme is financed through contributions, one-third of which is paid by the EU staff member or pensioner.
EU staff members are entitled to a pension after at least 10 years of service. Since 2014, the retirement age is set at 66, but it is possible to take early retirement with a reduced pension from the age of 58. Alternatively, staff may also request to work longer, until the age of 70.
The PMO determines the financial rights of staff members (officials, contract, or temporary agents), calculates, and pays their salaries and allowances.
Expenses incurred by EU staff members who go on official missions, as well as by certain external experts participating in meetings organised by EU services, are reimbursed.
Temporary and contract agents may receive a temporary unemployment allowance when their contract with the EU Institutions expires.
